Can Dogs Eat Jam?
Dogs cannot eat jam due to the excess sugar content in them. Dogs owners should be aware that dogs should not eat jam since it contains more than 50% sugar. This apart since the fruit has been boiled, the nutritional value is totally lost. So all that is left is the pulp.
When ingested, high levels of sugar can lead to serious health problems in dogs such as obesity, diabetes, and liver disease. This entirely depends on the quantity of jam. While some people may think that the small amount of jam in their dog’s food won’t have any negative consequences, this is not the case. If the jam contains xylitol, then it can be toxic to dogs.
So if you’re looking for a safe and healthy treat for your furry friend, stick to recommended dog-friendly snacks. Dogs cannot eat jam since some of the fruits like grapes are not good for them. It is always important to know what your dog can and cannot eat.
Harmful Effects Of Jam To Dogs
Increase In Blood Sugar Levels Leading To Diabetes:
When you eat a spoonful of jam, the sugar in it goes into your bloodstream. Your dog’s bloodstream is no different. The sugar in the jam can increase the blood sugar in your dog.
That is not good for their health as it can lead to further health complications including diabetes. Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to other health problems down the road if not treated.
Jam can also be too sweet for some dogs’ tastes and is not the best carbohydrate source for your dog. However, a ‘once in a blue moon’ jam treat is fine, provided it is a very small quantity like a teaspoon of jam. This of course, is after you have checked the contents.
Obesity:
Sugar in the jam can lead to obesity in dogs, which is not good for their heart health or their overall health. Obesity can lead to several problems in dogs such as
- heart failure
- liver failure
- arthritis
- High blood pressure
- Chronic kidney disease
- Urinary tract disease
- Ligament tears
- Low thyroid hormone production
- Spinal problems.
Stomach Upset:
The citrates or acids in the jam can cause your dog to have a stomach upset. Dogs can suffer from gastric upsets too.
Citrates or acid from fruits such as oranges and grapefruit can affect the pH balance in your pet’s gut which may lead to stomach upset including vomiting.
In some cases, these symptoms are severe enough for hospitalization.
Diarrhea:
Citrates or acids in the jam can cause your dog to have Diarrhoea. the acids in the jam can make their stomachs upset, leading to diarrhea. If you want to stay on the safe side of things, don’t feed your pet any sugary stuff leave alone jams.
Fluid In The Chest:
Did you know that pectin in the jam can cause your dog to have fluids build up in their chest? Pectin is the ingredient in jams and jellies that makes them gel. However, when it comes to dogs, pectin can be very harmful.
Allergies & Skin Inflammation:
It’s always better to be safe than sorry. With the recent reports of pectin in jams causing allergies and inflammation, it might be time for you to reconsider your dog’s diet!
The pectin found naturally in certain foods can cause inflammation on your pets’ skin which would make them itch or get rashes which turn infectious when scratched.
Pancreatitis:
Eating too much jam can lead to pancreatitis in dogs, a serious condition that requires prompt treatment. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, and it can be very painful for your pet. Symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, and diarrhea.
Cavities:
Do you know what can cause cavities in a dog’s tooth? We all know that sugar is bad for our teeth, but did you know that it can be just as harmful to your pet?
Dogs love the taste of sugary things like fruit and jam. And when they eat them, it can actually lead to dental problems over time.
Toxic:
Whether you’re a fan of raspberry jam or grape jelly, it’s important to know that the preservatives found in these spreads can be toxic for your dog. If you’re looking for a healthy treat, stick to recommended dog-friendly snacks.
Is A Jam With Artificial Sweetener Okay For Dogs?
Many jams contain artificial sweeteners, and these sweeteners can be even more harmful than cane sugar. Many brands contain artificial sweeteners like xylitol.
Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, liver failure, and seizures. It can be fatal. So keeping the jam away from your dog is the best thing to do.
Sugar-free jams also typically use artificial sweeteners instead, like aspartame or saccharin, which are also not healthy for dogs in large quantities. In fact, aspartame can actually be toxic to dogs in high doses.
Are Jams without any form of Sugar Okay For Dogs?
Even without sugar, jams would still contain pectin and preservatives and this can be harmful. So just because the jam is devoid of sugar or artificial sweeteners, it does not mean that it’s okay for your dog to eat jam.
Also, if it is grapefruit jam or mixed fruit jam, then it can be fatal. So avoiding jams altogether is the best thing to do.
Are Homemade Jams Safe For Dogs?
A very common question I get asked is, “Is homemade jam safe for my dog?”. Homemade jams typically contain sugar which is not good for your dog.
If it is an artificial sweetener, it is even worse. When there are several alternatives available, the best thing to do is give your dog treats that are approved by your vet.
Pro Tip: Always do your research before feeding your dog with anything even if it is homemade. What is fine by humans, need not always be okay for your dog.
What Should You Do If Your Dog Eats Jam?
Dogs and jam are not a great combination. Ingesting any kind of sweeteners, such as high-fructose corn syrup or any other form of sugar can be potentially dangerous for dogs.
If your dog eats jam which has xylitol, call your veterinarian immediately. Your vet will be able to decide the best course of action depending on the quantity of jam consumed and the fruits in the jam.
Otherwise a small quantity on a rare basis is not fatal. In such cases you can avoid giving your dog any further sugary treats for the next one or two days. This will balance the blood sugar levels.
What Are The Snacks That You Can Give Your Dog?
- Ready-made vet-approved dog treats
- apples(without the seed), bananas, and carrots in moderation
- pumpkin-based treats
- Beans & cooked sweet potatoes
- mangoes
- Oatmeal treats
- salmon
Wrapping Up:
Overall, it’s best to avoid giving your dog jams of any kind. Giving your dog jam of any kind, sugar-free or not, can lead to digestive and other health problems. Remember, Xylitol is toxic. If you do want to treat your dog with a spoon of jam, check the contents without fail. However jam on a regular basis is no-no.
There are many other safe and healthy snacks that you can give your pet instead. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult with your veterinarian.
